An alarming two-thirds of mechanically ventilated intensive care unit patients develop an acute and often severe and long-lasting brain dysfunction that begins as ICU-delirium. Over one-half of ICU survivors subsequently suffer a functionally debilitating dementia-like chronic illness, which appears related to the duration of delirium. Without formal measurement, ICU-delirium is missed 75% of the time. Dr. Ely will present available tools to diagnose delirium in ICU patients and implement proven treatment strategies to reduce the impact of this newly recognized and devastating illness.
