An alarming two-thirds of mechanically ventilated intensive care unit patients develop an acute and often severe and long-lasting brain dysfunction that begins as ICU-delirium. Over one-half of ICU survivors subsequently suffer a functionally debilitating dementia-like chronic illness, which appears related to the duration of delirium. Without formal measurement, ICU-delirium is missed 75% of the time. Dr. Ely presents available tools to diagnose delirium in ICU patients and implement proven treatment strategies to reduce the impact of this newly recognized and devastating illness. Professor is E.
